A Thought From My Cousin

"When they talk about Separation of Church and State, they seem to imply that it was needed so Church authorities would not have power over the everyday lives of people in society.  But, it also enables the Church to speak out against abuses by the State.

Many clergymen were outspoken in opposition to US involvement in the Vietnam War.  They would not have been able to do that if they had been employees of the State.  Many clergymen were active in the Civil Rights Movement.  Of course, outside the South, most governments claimed to support the movement.  But, if the clergymen had worked for the State, their activity in the movement could not have gone beyond what their bosses in the State would have allowed."  David Gore
